The Monterey Bay Aquarium witnessed the birth of a wild baby otter. The touching moment was caught on camera and is quickly spreading on the internet as the cutest animal video at the moment. Take that kittens and pups (but don’t go away for long).
The news of the baby otter’s birth just surfaced this week after workers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium found an otter taking shelter in the open-ocean tide pool. Concerned about the otter’s health, the staff kept it under observation. It was all worth it. Normally, otters don’t stray into the open-ocean tide pool. They prefer their natural habitat and swimming freely in the ocean waters.
Yet, the reason for which the adult otter took shelter in the Monterey Bay Aquarium became clear. The adult otter was about to give birth to her own cute pup. Cuteness overload! Did we mention cute yet?
Following the birth of the baby otter, photos of the pair playing and the adult otter nursing the baby otter flooded the internet. And they’re worth a watch if you’re looking for a soothing, endearing source of cute.
The adult otter had been taking up a spot in the open-ocean tide pool of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Winter storms could have also pushed the mother-to-be there. Yet, the staff believe it was more due to the fact that it is a safe retreat the adult otter found in the pool. A safe retreat that offered the perfect spot for the birth of the pup. According to the website of the Monterey Bay Aquarium:
“We’re talking umbilical-chord-still-attached-whoa-it’s that-yep-that’s the placenta-newborn otter pup!”
With the mystery solved on Sunday, the Monterey Bay Aquarium staff thought the moment should be shared with the world. Because it is cute and it is fascinating to watch the baby otter floating on its mother’s belly. All that while the mother is fluffling its fur and nurturing its pup lovingly.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium witnessed the birth of a wild baby otter. In addition, all the grooming and nurturing process implies. The aquarium staff did not intervene in any way. So far, the otter and its pup left the safe pool a couple of times. Yet they returned.
Soon however, it is expected that they will take the jump back in their natural habitat as the adult otter has to dive for abalone or clams. The baby otter will be left on the surface until the mother returns. Just until the otter pup learns the strings of diving too.
