Nowadays, the Internet can become extremely cruel to people. A type of bullying community grows little by little every day, and it consists of bullies who hide behind their computers and start throwing mean comments on the social media. There is another milder, form of bullying and it refers to the memes. Most of the times, memes are funny and don’t harm anyone. But there are times when people’s appearances are used and mocked by writing all kinds of memes about them. A meth curry has been circulating these days on the internet and it actually got viral, but there is an ugly truth behind it. Apparently, the object of the meth curry meme is actually a cancer survivor.
Leon Mitchell was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Mitchell survived the fatal disease and now lives in Washington, but although he won the battle against cancer, the effects of the disease still show. He declared that he is still struggling with the way the cancer changed his body.
While he was doing chemotherapy, a photo has been taken of him. That photo was recently found and turned into a cruel meme. His photo was chosen in the first place, because Leon Mitchell looks a lot like Stephen Curry, who is an American basketball player. The meme called Meth Curry referred to how the basketball player would look like after taking meth for a long time.
As the meme became viral, Leon Mitchell stumbled upon the picture today and he took to Instagram to fight back. He said that the joke is not as funny as people believed, because behind it stood a disease that almost killed him, and while trying to do that, it almost destroyed his appearance and body as well. The cancer stopped his nose, throat, shoulders and neck from functioning as they should. He also said that he was disappointed at how cruel could people be. He said that even though he felt bad about the way he looked for years, he finally overcame. This has also made him stronger and is not afraid to show his appearance to the world anymore.
He had a powerful message about these kinds of jokes though. He said that even though the meme didn’t hurt him that much, every day people face these types of attacks and bullying and can be extremely hurtful to a lot of them. He also said that if something would get viral, it should be for all the right reasons. He concluded his post by saying that he is more than a meme. He is a father, a husband, a motivational speaker and a community advocate.
After finding out that the object of the meth curry meme is actually a cancer survivor, a lot of people took to twitter to show their support for Leon Mitchell.
