More than half of adults from all over the world struggle with back pain, leading to plenty of lost productivity and more sufferers every year. Therefore, a team of scientists and engineers wanted to find a way to alleviate this pain, and found a quite unusual way to do it. Their idea consists of smart underwear which can help relieve the tension in the lower back.
How to solve the back pain problem?
Karl Zelik, who teaches mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University, has started suffering severe back pain after constantly picking up and holding his son in his arms. This is why he started looking for a solution to his problem, and thought of creating something you could wear and make your back feel better.
This is how he came up with the idea of smart underwear to alleviate the stress in the lower back. The wearable device has two pieces of fabric made of polyester, Lycra, and nylon, which the wearer has to put over the chest and legs. These pieces of material are kept in place by a few straps stretching over the back, and rubber covering the lower back.
Smart underwear to release the tension in your muscles
The device can be controlled via Bluetooth or manually, if you double-tap your shirt. When you activate it, it takes all the stress you usually put on your lower back and transfers it into the fabric. By double-tapping again, all the pressure is released and you can sit down.
To test the device, they had several people wear the smart underwear and lift weights while standing in various difficult positions. Then, they observed how the tension in the lower back muscles was reduced by up to 45 percent.
This smart underwear is a clever solution to a problem which affects more people every day. If you have to stand up most of the day, you can still do your job and have something to release the tension accumulating in your back muscles.
