The Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is known to affect a lot of people lately. Many people find it hard to cope with the seasons changing and the fact that the night becomes longer is bothering some. Specialists argue that we have no reasons to worry. This thing is just a transitory stage. We should take a look at the bright side, enjoying the snow and the holidays which are approaching.
This condition is known as “seasonality” or “the winter blues, ” and it is extremely common. The Seasonal Affective Disorder is considered by scientists to be more severe. Seasonality usually starts in the fall unfolding until the end of the winter months. Among the symptoms of this condition, specialists listed low energy, oversleeping, changes in appetite, irritability, and weight changes.
Those who experience “the winter blues” might enjoy more spending time by themselves, preferring to be more isolated than they usually are. What is more, they may become sensitive when it comes to criticism.
One of the principal causes which trigger seasonality is represented by the limited period of exposure to sunlight because the weather is always cloudy and the daytime is shorter. The lack of sunlight can disturb the internal clock of the body, but also decreasing the serotonin levels in the brain. Thus, the levels of melatonin are affected. Melatonin plays a significant role in establishing our sleep and mood patterns.
Some researchers claimed that winter holidays mar be depressing for some and happy events for others. Those who believe that Christmas plays a negative role tend to cause mixed feelings for those friends or relatives who could not be by your side. This mood could quickly be amplified if you had recently experienced problems in your relationship or marriage, or if you dealt with the loss of someone you have loved.
Even though scientists argue that this type of disorder is common, you should try to overcome the condition and become cheerful and active because a new year is approaching and you will get the chance to do what you did not do so far, crossing out wishes from your “to do” list. To surpass the condition, people should exercise more, walking in the park and keeping their blinds open to allow the sunlight in the house.
