This year on Giving Tuesday you can make a real difference, by giving the supreme gift to somebody in need: the gift of life. Or rather a higher chance of staying alive.
The Red Cross urges Americans to visit their Holiday Gift Catalog and make a tax-deductible donation that can actually mean something to somebody.
Among the gifts you can choose from, there are fire alarms and safety trainings, for just $15.00. This would be really helpful since in the US every seven minutes a home fire occurs. Other gifts for the Red Cross could be blankets for victims of disasters; blood services to make sure that those who need a transfusion get the needed blood or even the gift of reconnecting families separated by natural disasters or by war.
The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that every year helps people affected by tens of thousands of disasters. They also provide almost 40 percent of the United States’ blood supply to almost 2,700 transfusion centers and hospitals. Besides that, they teach people skills that can save their or other persons’ lives. Last but not least, they deliver about 400,000 humanitarian services to active military members, veterans and their loved ones.
The Giving Tuesday refers to the Tuesday after the Thanksgiving. It has been started in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and the 92nd Street Y in response to the consumerist period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a day when people are expected to give something back to the community, to the nonprofits or to people who wouldn’t give them anything in return. It is a day when we should be generous and concentrate on gifts that really matter.
Red Cross provides a gift catalogue from which you can choose to send a gift for someone in need. All the donations are tax-deductible so on Giving Tuesday you can give something meaningful, which could change a life.
On the page of their online catalogue, you can see where your donations went and also read inspiring stories from people who received help from persons like you.
The most popular gift is vaccinations for kids around the world. With $25 you can give vaccinations to 25 children. This is followed by comfort kits for service members and hot meals for survivors of disasters. The last of the most acquired gifts is a day in a shelter for one person, that include 3 meals, 2 blankets, snacks and supplies of personal hygiene for persons impacted by disaster.
