The U.S. Department of Agriculture and US Department of Health and Human Services issued the latest version of the Dietary Guidelines for the Americans. The biggest change that was discovered is that flossing our teeth daily is no more on the list! This came as a surprise for many dental experts around the world.
It seems that after reading more than 25 studies, that had been published these past few years, the evidence for this matter is not as strong as it should be. Doctors and dental experts say that just because this habit does not appear anymore in the guideline, it does not mean we should skip it.
We do not know how effective it can be, but we are sure it will not cause any harm. Robert Wergin, MD assured that there is no downside. If we want a bright smile and a good oral health, we should clean our teeth as much as possible. Of course, there are not many long-term benefits, but as long as it does not have negative effects, dental experts recommend it. It seems that the biggest evidence regarding this matter comes from children, who have low exposure to fluoride. Also, it seems like flossing reduces the risk of dental caries.
The authorities had also explained why flossing is no longer in the dietary guidelines. The Advisory Committees did not find any evidence that flossing out teeth can bring positive effects to our health. That is the reason why the authors of the guidelines decided not to include it anymore. But this doesn’t mean that oral hygiene is not important. Flossing could come back into the guidelines only after a study that will take a long time to develop. People who floss should be compared with those who do not have this habit, but this is considered unethical, so it is not very likely to happen.
In conclusion, even the dietary guidelines omit flossing, you should not. Oral hygiene is very important for your health and activities such as brushing your teeth and flossing should become a habit. What do you think? Is flossing important for our health?
