New technology will help cancer patients avoid hair loss during chemotherapy sessions. A scalp-cooling device can reduce hair loss by approximately 50% in individuals who have breast cancer. The new research has proved that half of the participants in the study who used the device presented slight or no hair loss compared to those individuals who signed up chemotherapy had experienced total or severe hair loss.
The analysis of a subgroup has demonstrated that those patients who underwent taxane-based chemotherapy had encountered extraordinary results after using the electronic scalp cap. The therapy based on taxane is already known as being one of the treatments which imply the less severe loss of hair.
What is more, another subgroup consisting of patients who received as treatment anthracycline-based chemotherapy, after using the revolutionary device, they had also experienced incredible outcomes. Julie Nangia, MD, of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston report at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), argued that only a few of her patients expressed adverse effects associated with the new technology. The most common symptom was a headache.
Nangia claimed that these intelligent devices bring amazing results determining any cancer patient to become more optimistic. This is extremely useful especially for women who were diagnosed with breast cancer and who depend on of the chemotherapy treatment. The new product expects for the consent of the FDA to be marketed in the US.
Researchers have established that they need to explore even more to develop a suitable technology bound to help even other types of tumors. Harold Burstein, PhD., MD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, has asserted that scalp-cooling procedures have revolutionized the field of medicine for years now. The difference is that earlier versions of the device were composed out of water-cooled fabric meant to cover the head of the patient. That type of product did not prove to obtain positive results.
Burstein has stated that only new-generation procedures managed to bring success, and not old practices. He also argued that the device clearly stops hair loss, also preventing it. Nevertheless, he also stated that there exist some regimens which contain anthracyclines and which are not entirely capable of preventing the results of the harsh chemotherapy.
Burstein also declared that he hopes people will become more interested in using this technology, also wishing for the product to get insurance coverage and become widespread.
