Cancer fear has determined people to pay more attention to their skin when they go sunbathing, but most of them don’t know that relying only on one method does not offer them full protection. Sunscreen is the most widely used method of protection from the harmful ultraviolet rays, but there are other ways to consider before heading out to the beach.
Choose your sunscreen carefully
It is important to pay attention to the sunscreen you choose, as some of them might contain dangerous chemicals, which can especially affect children. Keep in mind that a higher SPF does not always mean a better protection, but make sure you choose a cream with a factor higher than 30. Also, check the label for protection against UV-A and UV-B, or something with a broad spectrum specification.
Once you are on the beach, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or the way it is indicated on the label. Reapplying is really important since sunscreen loses its protective properties if you stay too much exposed to the sun. If you sweat or go swimming, then the cream also goes away, so you need to put it back.
Don’t rely only on sunscreen to protect your skin
Besides sunscreen, always wear a hat or stay under an umbrella to protect the most sensitive areas of your skin, such as face, shoulders, and neck. Also, sunglasses with UV-A and UV-B protection are a plus. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and avoid spending too much time outside between the hours when the sunrays are strongest, namely between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Have you taken any medicine before going out? Anti-inflammatory pills, such as ibuprofen, make the skin more sensitive, so you are more likely to get sunburnt in these cases. Also, if you want to have protection from the inside, you can take vitamin D supplements. You don’t have to give up all the fun in the sunlight if you take good care of your skin.
