The high-tech sensor could be the future of medicine. According to the latest news, scientists have built a new sensor that is able to detect the E.coli bacteria in 15-20 minutes. The new technology was built by researchers from the Photonics Research Center, Canada and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
They said that using the technologies available now, it takes many hours or days to detect if the person was infected with the bacteria. They managed to find an easier way. This could mean also a faster treatment for the patients. The high-tech sensor will be cheaper for the doctors to use and they will have more time for other patients.
If you are interested to know this technology will work, the sensor will use bacteriophages. These are a virus that can kill bacteria. They are put on the surface of an optical fiber and will take the E. Coli bacteria from a sample. When the light touches the surfaces, doctors will be able to see if the bacteria is there.
Researchers managed to add an additional optical component, which is able to cancel the temperature changes. The high-tech sensor is temperature insensitive over 20-degree Celsius and they can resist even to 40-degrees Celsius. This way, the optical properties of the materials will not change and sensors will discover if there is a bacterial infection there.
E-coli bacteria live in the intestines of people and animals. They can be found in human’s intestinal tract and they are an important part of it. However, they are able to cause problems if the bacteria are transmitted by contaminated water or food. Its symptoms are different for every person, but if you are infected, you could have diarrhea or vomiting. Most people feel better in a week, but there are some who have to take treatment for years.
Many people are taking antibiotics because they think this would help. The truth is there was no evidence that E.coli was treated by antibiotics and you should see a doctor before taking a treatment. If you want to prevent this virus, wash your hands after you had contact with animals. Moreover, cook your meals at the right temperatures.
We are hoping this high-tech sensor will be able to help many patients, faster than it was done in the past. There are people who died because of E.coli are children are at a higher risk. What do you think about this new sensor researchers have discovered?
