COUNCIL CHRONICLE – On Wednesday, following a 15-minute-long deliberation, the jury sentenced 62-year-old Donald Smith to death for the abduction, rape, torture, and murder of 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle in 2013. The judge’s ruling concludes a five-year-long trial which tore up Perrywinkle’s family.
Donald Smith Considered the Text-Book Definition of a Psychopath
After five years of remembering each of the ordeal faced by Cherish Perrywinkle the day she died, her family can now move on and start a new life.
This Wednesday, a Florida jury found Donald Smith guilty of kidnapping, sexual assault, and first-degree murder. Smith’s case will be next appealed to the Florida Supreme Court.
According to the Perrywinkle case document, on the 21st of June 2013, Rayne Perrywinkle, Cherish’s mother took her three daughters to shop for clothes at a local discount store. Given Rayne’s financial situation, she and her family were an easy target for monsters like Donald Smith.
Before heading up front to pay for the items, Rayne observed an elderly gentleman looking at her counting her savings. After a couple of minutes, Smith walked up to the woman and offered to buy clothes for her children.
Mrs. Perrywinkle first turned him down but changed her mind when Smith told her that his wife had a Walmart gift card she will gladly part with.
After taking Rayne and her children shopping, Smith asked the woman if he could take their daughters to the nearby McDonald’s for a meal.
Perrywinkle was the only one who went with Smith. That was the last time someone saw the 8-year-old Florida girl alive.
Several days later, Cherish Perrywinkle’s body would be found by the authorities. According to the coroner’s report, the child was strangled, raped, and apparently hit in the back of her head with a heavy object before her body was dumped in a creek.
