A revolutionary and unusual method helped a cancer patient to combat depression. They can surpass their mood swings by using mushrooms. Patrick Mettes is one of the patients who was able to fight against frustration and depression. He suffered from bile duct cancer. This disease was stressing him out at a greater extent than any other member of his family ever believed. His supportive wife, Lisa Callaghan, has never thought that her husband suffered from depression.
Mettes volunteered to take part in a study, trying to find a productive way to spend his time. He received a synthetic version of psilocybin. This represents a compound which is usually encountered in the composition of mind-manipulating mushrooms. It constitutes a potential treatment for anxiety and depression, helping patients overcome their mood swings and stress caused by their incurable disease.
The psychedelic trip which Mettes received during the new study was related to a spectacular journey. The patient has argued that the trip caused by the mushrooms seemed as if he was departing from this planet in a spacecraft and then he is gradually able to feel weightless, being as light as a feather. He felt the immensity and massiveness of the universe floating around in cosmos.
Mettes’ wife argued that this kind of treatment has helped her husband relax, feeling as if he had no worries. She also claimed that probably these mushrooms bound to combat depression helped her husband live every moment as if it were the last one. Mettes has written about his psychedelic trips in his journal.
After a while, since he engaged in the study, the patient suffered a massive heart attack. Luckily, he was strong enough, his body fought and managed to survey. Apparently, this event caused Mettes to make a very harsh decision. He considered that he needed to give up chemotherapy. Mettes, who was the news director of the New York-based television, has lost his fight against cancer, passing away in 2012 at the age of 56.
His wife, Lisa Callaghan, asserted that the use of psilocybin proved to be a significant help for a man who lost his hope when fighting against such a terrible disease. The treatment helped him be more optimistic, seeing life from a different perspective, living every moment to the fullest. The psychedelic trips helped him get rid of his fear of death.
