An annual report issued by the U.S. News & World Report magazine unveiled the nation’s best hospitals by specialty, overall performance, and location. Authors of the report argued that the rankings are necessary to help patients nationwide make informed choices when it comes to their health care.
For the study, the magazine sifted through data on about 5,000 health centers across the U.S. and more than two dozen clinical areas, conditions and procedures.
A special section of the report is called the Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which marks the hospitals that stood out in the crowd due to the exceptional treatments they provide. Mayo Clinic in Minn. is on top the list, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Mayo Clinic is also listed this year as the nation’s best hospital in diabetes and geriatrics.
Other hospitals on the Honor Roll are Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore (no.4), UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, LA (no. 5), and New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell in New York metropolitan area, NY (no.6).
The best hospitals by specialty are the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center followed by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in NY, and Mayo Clinic for their outstanding cancer treatments; the Cleveland Clinic followed by the Mayo Clinic and the New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell for their heart surgery and cardiology departments; and New York City’s Hospital for Special Surgery, Mayo and Cleveland clinics in orthopedics.
In pediatrics, the best U.S. hospitals are Dana-Farber Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center for cancer, Boston Children’s Hospital for heart and kidney diseases, urology, neurology, neonatology, and orthopedics, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for diabetes, and Texas Children’s Hospital for lung diseases.
Lead author of the analysis Ben Harder said that the magazine seeks to provide patients with “high-quality information” on the nation’s hospitals. Plus, the magazine advocates for more transparency and fairer, more comprehensive ways of assessing the quality of medical care in the U.S. medical centers.
You can check the full rankings on the publication’s website for free. The report is slated to be published in the magazine’s “Best Hospitals 2017” guidebook. You can pre-order the guide starting August 1.
The latest work was the result of collaboration between U.S. News analysts and the RTI international team. This year’s edition of the guidebook will be spomsored by Fidelity Investments.
