The surprise pregnancy was welcomed by the family.
Stephanie Jaegers, a 37 years old Georgia resident, admitted herself to the hospital after experiencing intense abdominal pain. The woman believed she had kidney stones, but instead, she found out that she had a new family member on the way. The surprise pregnancy was due on the same day she sought medical help.
Jaegers believed that she was experiencing pre-menopause symptoms when she sometimes had mood swings. Her back hurt from time to time, too, and urination was periodically accompanied by slight stings, but she attributed the strange occurrences to kidney stones.
Moreover, the woman did not gain any extra weight, and her stomach only looked like she had a mild case of bloating. Most importantly, Jaegers was on her period when she came to the hospital.
When filling out the forms, the nurses asked her if she was pregnant, but she said no. When doctors started examining her, their first instinct was to recommend an MRI scan. However, after a quick abdominal exam, they decided to try an ultrasound instead. That is when the Jaegers family received news of the surprise pregnancy.
It seems that the baby was positioned in breech presentation, meaning that his head was up and his feet pointed downwards. Furthermore, he was situated in the upper part of the abdomen, reaching towards the intercostal space. That is why Jaegers did not look pregnant.
At first, the woman was recommended to undergo a caesarean section, but then the doctors discovered that she was sufficiently dilated for a vaginal birth.
At 03:50 AM, on Wednesday, three hours after the Jaegers family was notified of the surprise pregnancy, a 7 pounds Shaun Jude Jaegers was delivered. The baby boy is healthy, and his parents are happy to welcome him.
According to the mother, after her last pregnancy, which presented several complications along the way, she was advised by her doctor to avoid getting pregnant again. She took precautionary measures, but little Shaun seemed determined to join the family.
He already has a crib and a car seat from his older brothers and sisters, the Jaegers being more worried about all the clothes shopping that they did not get a chance to do.
Some people consider themselves unprepared for the birth of a child even when they have 9 months to cope with the idea. The Jaegers had three hours, and it is all they needed.
