Windows 10 is giving you the freedom of playing DVDs on your device, but only at the price of almost 15$. Now the reviews on Windows 10 are in good standing and the operating system is getting a lot of appraisal, but some people pretty much have to call this particular feature a complete rip-off.
Microsoft might have unintentionally given us a good reason to pursue movie downloads and streams, but there is a thought that keeps coming back over and over: Windows 10 was launched for free. Anybody can get it, but if anybody wants to watch a DVD movie, they have to spend more money than they did to buy an entire operating system
Now why all the fuss about it? It is mainly because, up until this point, we were accustomed to having the DVD player for free. It was never a question about how much extra money you would have to spend so that you could watch your favorite movie on a DVD. The fact that it has come out like this out of a sudden is the reason why many users are baffled.
We must look at the bigger picture, however. Microsoft released Windows 10 free of charge. That is a big move and it resembles the “free to play” model that many gaming companies adopted as well. The entire deal is given to you for free, but there has to be some compensation out of it as well. If 100 people buy the 15$ app, it is the equivalent of them selling a few operating systems.
There are also a lot of ways for you to bypass the purchase by downloading a free app like VLC. VLC will take care of any video format, including the ones that the Windows DVD player cannot handle. And just a quick update: the DVD player does not handle Blu-rays. So that 15$ purchase might not be such a good investment after all.
We live in an era in which DVDs are slowly fading. While the popularity of Blu-rays is still up, we can mostly rely on USB sticks to carry our movies from here to there and there are millions of sites and apps that we can access to see our favorite celebrities in their latest award-winning movie.
It remains to be seen whether the app is going to be purchased by many users or not, but from a very objective point of view it seems that it is simply not worth the money.
