A partial femur that is 14,000 years old found in China might be the proof that an unknown species of humans have survived much more longer than scientists believed was possible. That means that during the ice age along with the Neanderthals lived either Homo erectus or Homo habilis species. But only one human species survived by the end of the ice age, that took place 10,000 years ago and that was Homo sapiens.
The fossil was left for 25 years unstudied in a museum in the Southwest of China. The femur was found along with other fossilized remains in 1989 in the Maludong Cave, which translated is Red Deer Cave. The remains belonged to an unknown species of dark skinned people.
According to Darren Curnoe and Ji Xueping, the bone could have belonged to either an ancestor from Homo erectus or Homo habilis. They lived approximately 1,5 million years ago.
The thigh bone of the fossil is extremely small like the one of the Homo habilis species, according to the professor Ji Xueping. The person weighed only 50 kg making him a very small man by those times and modern standards. His cortex was very thin and narrow, the neck of his femur was long and the muscle of his hip was really big.
The newly studied bone suggests that these primitive humans might have survived much more than expected. The researchers are not sure though because the one bone can only tell so much. Also, the specimen showed a lot of damage.
This new discovery is highly controversial mostly because the scientists’ theory until now said that the youngest human who lived prior to the modern times in Eurasia died 40,000 years ago, soon after the Homo sapiens human entered the land. This new discovery divided the scientist.
Until now it has been believed that humans ancestors died in Asia 100,000 years ago so the 14,000 years old bone found that resembles very much that of a human has been a big surprise. It is believed that the mysterious species lived up until recently because it was an isolated population. The region where they lived was a tropical, unique region created by tectonic movements and largely isolated.
In 2012 the same team found some human skulls in the same cave. In the study published 3 years ago they believed that proof of a mysterious species of humans had been discovered.
