A grandmother of two can deadlift 225 pounds and we have video proof.
So, what’s your excuse for not exercising? This 78-year-old grandma from St. Louis can deadlift 225 pounds like it’s nothing. A 15-second video showing her feat has gone viral on the social media triggering a tidal wave of soul searching in younger folks.
Yet, maybe your inner procastinator now tells you that she has been weightlifting her entire life, so pulling off such feat though impressive for her age may not be that much. Well, tough luck. Shirley Webb, 78, told reporters that she started training at the age of 76.
She added that she was in a poor physical condition when she joined a fitness club in Wood River at her granddaughter’s request. But at Club Fitness gym, she found that she was really good at powerlifiting.
She began practicing like there was no tomorrow and six months later she was already able to dealift around 200 pounds. She now hits the gym twice a week, and doesn’t plan to slow down.
But when she first arrived at the fitness club, she needed to hold on the handrail when climbing stairs, and a chair to get up from the floor, Webb told reporters. Surprisingly, she can now get up off the floor in the blink of an eye, and the harder she works out, the better she feels.
She even broke two state records at deadlifting for her age group last year. She was first able to awe audience by deadliftig 237lbs at a contest in Belleville, Ill, while in November, she deadlifted 245 lbs.
After she learned about the video’s popularity, she said she was happy that she became such a huge inspiration for all types of people out there. She recalled that a woman approach her at the gym thanking her for the video and telling her that it inspired her to join the fitness club.
“That makes me feel good,”
Webb said.
She also said that she has plans to shatter the record in her age group once more at a competition in June and deadlift 260lbs.
The video was first posted on Instagram Monday. In just one day, it grabbed 75,100 likes and over 18,000 comments.
Powerlifter J.J. Watt praised the granny on Twitter saying that his only ambition was to live to 78 let alone still be weightlifting at that age.
