The writer of the first two games in the Half Life series is retiring.
The fans of the Half Life games have been waiting for news of the third game for some time now. Little they expect that the first news related to Half Life to be that the writer of Half Life is retiring.
Half Life is a science fiction shooting game, developed by Valve in 1998. The main character of the game is Doctor Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist, who has to find the way out of a secret research facility. This happens after teleportation experiments done in that space have gone very wrong. When it was released, the game was universally appraised and it is still considered one of the greatest games of all times. The sequel was released in 2004 and was equally praised.
The news came this Friday, when a response to an e-mail written by a fan of the games came from Marc Laidlaw. The exchange of emails between the fan and the former writer was confirmed to be accurate by Gamasutra. The e-mail of the fan begun with the question as to why the creators of Half Life don’t make an official statement to say that the third game in the series will never be released. Surprisingly, the writer and designer of the first and second Half Life games responded with a long e-mail. He said that he can’t answer his question, because he is retiring from Valve.
Laidlaw’s e-mail contains a nine questions interview, and both the questions and the answers were written by Laidlaw. He said that he retired because he was old and his plans for the future include writing stories. He also answered one of the most anticipated questions, and that is what does his retirement mean for the future of the loved series. He said that the game was already developing when he first came to work for Valve and that means that he won’t be able to influence the future of the game in any way. He also said that since he no longer works for Valve, he can’t divulge any plans that the gaming company might have.
The fans of Half Life are now speculating whether the retirement of Marc Laidlaw and the strange way he chose to announce it, might be a promotional stunt for the new game. If the game is on the works, as fans think, then it will definitely be different from the previous two, since the writer of Half Life is retiring.
