According to Russian authorities, Mikhail Popkov, nicknamed by the press The Werewolf or The Angarsk Maniac, is due to make another court appearance. The man serves a life in prison sentenced might be found guilty of 40 new murders, following a prison confession.

In 2012, the Eastern Siberian authorities arrested Popkov and charged him with sexual assault and homicide. The man admitted to raping and killing 20 women, for which he received life in prison sentence.
However, the man, who will be known to the rest of the world as The Werewolf could be held accountable for even more fiendish crimes. While serving his time in an Eastern Siberia prison, the Werewolf told the police officials that he killed more people than he originally admitted.
Further investigations revealed that the perpetrator had different MOs, but most of the time, he traveled at night, in his police car, and offered lone women a ride home. Popkov would have driven them to a secluded spot, where he would savagely rape and killed them.
Should the new allegations prove to be true, according to the Russian officials, Popkov will be declared the most prolific serial killer to plague the region in the last century. The Werewolf’s initial hearing was held and Wednesday, with the judges adjourning the session for deliberation until Monday.

According to the court documents, Popkov’s murders could have been motivated by his wife, whom he long suspected of having extramarital relations. As to how he received his nickname, the man used various instruments to carry out his vile acts, from axes, knives to screwdrivers and baseball bats.
