The Game Developers Choice Awards announced this year’s nominees. The games with the most nominations include The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with four nominations and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which also received four nominations. Other games with multiple nominations are Fallout 4, Splatoon, Star Wars Battlefront and Bloodborne.
The Game Developers Choice Awards are presented each year during the Game Developers Conference for incredible games and game developers. These awards were introduced in 2001 and replaced the Spotlight Awards, which took palce between 1997 and 1999. Five nominees are accepted for each category, and only one is chosen as the winner.
The nominees for the game of the year award are Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rocket League, Bloodborne and Fallout 4. Last year, the game of the year award went to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, a game based on the realities from Lord of the Rings. The best debut game was Stoic Studio, the best handheld game was Monument Valley, the best downloadable game was Papers,Please, the excellence in audio was taken by Alien Isolation and the best design by Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Other winners included Destiny and Kentucky Route Zero: Episode 3.
Every game that was released in 2015 was taken into consideration, and the nominations and winners were selected by people chosen by the Game Developers Choice Awards International Choice Awards. The games were selected no matter how big the platform they were launched on was. For example, Undertale and Her Story received multiple nominations, even though they didn’t have a massive budget, like Fallout 4 had. These people are mostly game creators or are part of the videogame industry.
The Game Developers Choice Awards will take place on March 16 and will start at 6:30 pm. The show will be hosted by one of the founders of Funomena, who also produced Journey, Robin Hunicke. During the show, three special awards will be offered for Lifetime Achievement, Ambassador and Pioneer. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a developer who has impacted the games and the game developments. Last year this award went to Hironobu Sakaguchi, for the Final Fantasy series. The Pioneer Award was known as the First Penguin Award until 2007 and it goes to the persons who manage to develop a breakthrough game, design or technology. Last year, the award went to David Braben, who founded Frontier Developments and created the Elite series. The Ambassador Award goes to the individuals who helped advance the video games and last year it went to Brenda Romero. The nominees for the three special categories will be announced closer to the awards.
