NASA is collaborating with the Rhode Island School of Design to develop a new suit. This new equipment will be prepared in such a way to make the most suitable spacesuit for Mars missions. Scientists from NASA have already thought about building a dome where they could conduct a simulation of a Mars mission.
To plan a simulation to the very last detail, they will also need to think of another model of spacesuit which will fulfill all their needs. Thus, many students and staff members from the Rhode Island School of Design have thought of several ways to develop an adjustable suit which could resemble a real spacesuit.
The suits used by astronauts in space are designed to be suitable in zero gravity. They were considered to be too expensive to be employed in a Mars simulation funded by NASA. This simulation was planned to be developed in Hawaii. The space suits used for simulation are not that comfortable as expected. Unfortunately, they do not provide enough ventilation also being smaller than the usual ones.
The new suit which was recently developed will be revealed on December 12. Most likely, the suit will be tested during the simulation of Mars mission which will take place in 2017 in Hawaii. Another simulation mission which lasted for a year has recently ended back in August. That was the fourth Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS).
The founder of the study was NASA which was helped by members of the University of Hawaii. The chief engineering officer of the last simulation mission was Andrzej Stewart. Being 6.2 feet tall, Stewart was unable to zip up the suit which was prepared for the simulation. Thus, he needed to wear a hazmat suit which did not seem as realistic as the one usually used in such cases, but it proved to be easier to wear.
Sheyna Gifford, the space doctor of the mission, argued that the entire crew realized that they need a new suit for their simulated Mars missions that could fit anybody, being also comfortable and very useful. They knew that they needed a realistic suit to be sure that they will be able to handle all the necessary tools while wearing it, being aware of what kind of experiments they could conduct or not.
Their primary goal is to develop the most accurate simulation to inform NASA about the new data acquired during the simulated mission so that they could obtain favorable results during the future real mission.
