Researchers reveal the numerous benefits of being an older mother, indicating that children of older mothers face fewer emotional, social and behavioral problems. A group of scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark claims that usually, an older mother is more likely to raise well-behaved kids and be less stressed about this process.
Specialists present the benefits of childbearing later in life
The new study indicates that older mothers are less likely to criticize their kids and, thus, they appear to experience fewer social and emotional issues. The results of the new study were recently published in the European Journal of Developmental Psychology. It unveils that older mothers tend to be more confident and solvent. Dion Sommer, the study author of the research, argued that as years pass by, people usually become more mentally flexible, being more tolerant of others.
Sommer claimed that psychological maturity might be a plus for the education of older moms’ kids. This feature may explain why older moms do not physically discipline their kids as much as younger moms would do. The team of researchers surveyed 4,741 mothers, and they also monitored and assessed their kids at ages 7, 11 and 15. Children aged seven and eleven appeared to have fewer behavioral and emotional problems.
The kid of an older mother could raise developing fewer social and behavioral issues
Nevertheless, this effect seemed to level off when they reached the age of 15. Another significant result of this study is that as the age of the mother increased, the kid’s understanding of social and language development enhanced, irrespective of other factors like finances, education, and background. Sommer explained that this method of parenting could contribute to the elaboration of a psychosocial environment that affects the education of the children.
Researchers explain that the reason why this theory is a plausible one is that the flood of hormones in the body during pregnancy can interact and affect the function and chemistry of the brain. Older women tend to worry less about their pregnancies, being more positive when thinking that they will soon become parents.
Even if there are people who claim that being a young mother increases the chances of having healthy and happy kids, this study indicates that childbearing later in life might also bring a series of benefits.
