A new Yale University study revealed a surprising link between depression, overeating and stress. People who are extremely stressed and have the tendency to overeat are more likely to be anxious or depressed than the healthy people.
The research published in the Neuropharmacology journal forced rats to eat a lot of food that was high-fat. They were fed six more meals than normal in order to see if overeating causes not only metabolic disorders but depression as well.
After four months the rats’ metabolism wasn’t functioning well and they presented symptoms of depression and anxiety , which were treated with ketamine. The anesthetic, which is usually used as a recreational drug could help overcoming depression for humans as well and is currently being tested in clinical trials.
Ketamine is the most efficient for patients who have battled depression for a long period of time and can lower the symptoms of depression where other antidepressants couldn’t. When ketamine is administered, the brain starts rebuilding the damaged brain cell connections by activating mTORC (mammalian target of rapamycin).
These connections can be harmed by stress or depression. mTORC regulates cell growth and cell survival but also produces energy and decides how to store it. The role of mTORC in the metabolic processes is the reason why people who suffer from metabolic disorders are at higher of being depressed.
One of the study authors, professor Ronald Duman revealed that chronic stress and overeating are connected. Also, a bad diet and overeating can cause not only depression but type 2 diabetes as well.
Another recent and related study revealed that people overeat because they want to diminish the symptoms of depression or stress. As the bad diet starts to show, people get more depressed and a vicious cycle is thus being created. To end this cycle, doctors recommend that the real reasons that stand behind the anxiety, stress and depression should be analyzed and solved. Also, the physical activity is a great way of dealing with stress and depression because of the hormones that are produced while exercising.
The surprising ling between overeating, depression and stress being revealed, you can now do something about it. Depression affects approximately 14,8 billion American adults every year, making that a shocking 6,7% of the American population.
If you are one of them stop and think of the reasons that stand behind your depression and talk to somebody about it. Anything can be solved, if not by just talking, then by administered medicine as well. Take a stand against depression today.
