Couple Welcomes Sextuplets After Trying to Conceive for 17 Years

On May 11^th, a couple from Virginia became the parents of six babies after 17 years of struggling with infertility. The woman was helped to deliver the sextuplets by a team of 40 doctors from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. The babies are currently monitored in a neonatal intensive care unit at the Children’s Hospital in Richmond.

After 17 years of infertility, they have been blessed with sextuplets

Adeboye and Ajibola Taiwo have been struggling to have a baby for 17 years. Their joy was huge when, in November, the woman underwent an ultrasound and the doctor heard four heartbeats. However, this was not all. Their surprise was even bigger when, during the January check-up, they discovered two more.

On May 11^th, at 8:26 a.m., Ajibola underwent a C-section and gave birth to three boys and three girls. The babies are currently in a stable condition, but they still have to remain under close supervision. They weighed from 1 pound and 10 ounces to 2 pounds and 15 ounces, so they need to stay in hospital until they reach a normal weight for their age.

The medical team made sure everything went alright

The babies were born prematurely, at 30 weeks and two days. In spite of this, they are doing incredibly well and surprised the doctors with their condition. They made special preparations to take care of them, as well as for the delivery itself, which is quite a rare phenomenon. For instance, in 2015, there have been recorded only 24 births of quintuplets or higher.

This is why the team of doctors was so numerous. Experts from various fields needed to participate and make sure everything goes according to the plan. These fields included neonatal medicine, maternal-fetal medicine, anesthesia, nursing, nutrition, labor and delivery, and cardiology.

Now, everybody is expecting the babies to reach the expected weights quickly, and go home with their parents. The couple felt lucky to receive such great medical care, and is optimistic that their children are in good hands and will soon recover.
