Not all high school traditions are PG. It seems that in some cases, the traditional customs involve sexual encounters, some being consented, others a bit forces. However, when a senior tradition involves coercion, then the school administration should get involved and put a stop to it. That is why a prestigious New Hampshire boarding school is getting sued by a pair of angry parents.
Some high schools have the “Senior Prank” tradition where the senior class tries to pull the funniest prank in the history of the school. Others, have “Senior Camping” where the students gather round the stadium and camp out in sleeping bags.
However, it seems that there are schools where the seniors are not only trying to get the girls to come with them to the prom. According to the declaration of the parents that are suing the school, the “Senior Salute” tradition involves the senior boys trying to convince the younger girls to engage in sexual activities.
This tradition is firstly illegal because some of the senior boys may be over 18, meaning that they are having sexual relations with a minor. Secondly, it’s an unnecessary peer pressure that makes the girls feel obliged to give in and accept the advances.
The parents of one of these girls are suing St. Paul’s School for “failure to meet its most basic obligations to protect the children entrusted to its care while contending a warped culture of sexual misconduct and deviant moral norms.”
According to the suite that was filled, the school allows the ranking of freshman girls. It seems that the senior boys create a top, ranking the girls according to their beauty.
“[The suit] is without merit and we plan to defend ourselves vigorously. We categorically reject any allegations that St. Paul’s School has an unhealthy culture. The safety of our students has been and will continue to be the highest priority for our School,” representatives declared.
The victim is also suing Owen Labrie, a boy that served as hall monitor during the victim’s stay at the school. According to her, the man who is now 20, abused his senior status in order to coerce girls into sleeping with them.
He is currently serving a one-year sentence in prison for sexual offenses.
