Four years ago, Double Fine Productions broke records with the help of its crowdfunding campaign. On Wednesday, the gaming studio announced that Psychonauts will get a sequel. This was made possible by the fans of the game, who succeeded to raise more than $3.3 million.
In 2012, the same amount of money was raised by gaming fans in order for the Broken Age game to be created. This time though, the sum raised by the fans is equal to only one part of the game’s budget.
The launch of Psychonauts 2 was announced by the founder of Double Fine, Tim Schafer, at the Game Awards 2015. This time, the game will be funded by three sources. One source is represented by the fans, the other by Double Fine and the third source will be an external partner, who was not announced yet. Double Fine and the unknown source will have to add $10 million to the sum, in order for the project to be started.
This only proves that a game is almost impossible to be crowdfunded and the news comes to settle the requests for the Yu Suzuki’s Shenmue 3 to be crowdfunded as well. There were two types of crowdfunding. People could donate money for rewards on Kickstarter, or they could invest money and be considered accredited or unaccredited investors of the game. If people chose to be investors, then they will have profits only if the game will have a sales figure that will surpass $14.3 million. Double Fin estimated that approximately 690,000 games will need to be sold, each for $21. If this will happen, then the people who invested minimum $500, will make profits. When the game will surpass $13.3 million, payments to the investors will be made. The copies of the game were not included in the investments.
Although the campaign isn’t over yet, with five days still remaining, the campaign won’t ask for more money. According to Schafer, any money that will be received on top of the $3.3 million goal, will go into making a better and bigger game. The game will be launched in 2018 and will continue to follow the story of Raz. Raz will finally be able to go to Psychonauts, but he will realize that things are a lot different than he imagined. Psychonauts will get a sequel that will be released for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
