If asked, half of people would say that pets only disturb their sleep and could never imagine a sleeping situation that would involve a cat or a dog. Half would say they the exact opposite. What they don’t know is that pets in your bedroom can be beneficial and harmful as well.
A 2013 report realized by the Center for Sleep Medicine said that only 10% of the people who owned a pet told that their sleep was disturbed by their pet. The percentage went up by 1% since 2001.
The same center based in Arizona recently did a study while trying to figure out what the new percentage was. 150 persons took part in the survey, half of them being the owners of a pet. 41% of the people said that not only their pets didn’t disturb them during the night, but their presence makes them feel more relaxed and comfortable.
The men and women who slept alone in their room observed that their pets make them feel more secure and that they even dream easier. 56% of the people involved in the study revealed that they allow their pet to sleep either on their bed or in their bedroom.
The study also revealed that dogs are more likely than cats to sleep according to the same patterns that the owner has. Cats are proved to wander a lot during the night, but that didn’t stop two women surveyed to praise their beloved pets. One woman confessed that she doesn’t mind that her cat often sleeps on her chest while another one said that her cat calms her. Another animal that has proven not to be the best sleeping companion is the parrot. One woman involved in the study said that her parrot starts squawking in the early hours of the morning.
Even though people see it as normal or even comforting to sleep with their pet, researchers warn us that sleeping in the same room with our pet can affect our sleep. This warning comes as the number of pets owned by a household are bigger than ever. Sleep problems continue to affect millions of Americans.
Taking this into account, pets in your bedroom can be beneficial and harmful as well. If you own a pet and even though you see it as a family member, you are advised to grant yourself some nights without your pet in the bedroom.
