COUNCIL CHRONICLE – The queen is leaving the show; long live the queen! News emerged last week that Claire Foy is leaving The Crown.
A spokesperson for the Netflix Original Series The Crown has confirmed that Olivia Colman was cast to play Queen Elizabeth II in the third and fourth seasons of the show. In doing so, she will be replacing seasons 1 and 2 star Claire Foy.
Claire Foy, Leaving Behind Her Queen Elizabeth II Crown, Leaving It All Ready For Olivia Colman
One of the service’s most acclaimed works, The Crown chronicles the life of the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II throughout the many decades over which she ruled. Foy played the queen in her younger years, from 1947 until 1963, a period which was covered by the first two seasons of the show. Colman will, in turn, presumably be replaced by an older actress for the show’s following season.
Olivia Colman is 43 years old, at the moment, and she will start off by placing Queen Elizabeth in 1963 when the sovereign was 37 years old.
It will still be a while before Colman is “crowned,” however. Season two of the Netflix show is scheduled to come out on December 8, 2017. The third season will presumably be released about a year later.
Olivia Colman is an accomplished English actress. The AMC/BBC miniseries The Night Manager, where she played an intelligence officer named Angela Burr got her a nomination and Golden Globe Award. Olivia Colman also has three BAFTA Awards and three BIFA Awards, and many more nominations, including twice for the Emmys.
This is also not the first time that Colman played a royal: she was Queen Elizabeth II’s mother in Hyde Park on Hudson. Next year, in 2018, the British actress will play the main character in the biographical film The Favourite, about the life of Queen Anne.
Fans seem to support the casting decision, though some of them did note that Coleman does not really resemble Her Majesty. Toby Earle, the TV editor of the Evening Standard, seems to have spoken for many when he tweeted “Yeah Olivia Col[e]man is already the Queen.”
When discussing the matter, Claire Foy was reported as stating that “Going into the second series, there was a rumor that they were thinking of her, and I was like ‘yes, yes, yes!’ I just think she’s extraordinary. […] I just think that she will make it her own. And I just can’t wait to see what she does with it.”
