Three smartphones powered by different OSes sharing files via BitTorrent Shoot
BitTorrent announced the upcoming BitTorrent Shoot paid app that allows rapid and private small file transfer.
While there are questions as to how BitTorrent Shoot will fare with clients already having a wide choice of free transfer apps, the great add-on brought about by BitTorrent’s application is that it works across platforms.
So, three friends in a room, each owning a device operated by one of three Android, Windows or iOS operating systems will be able to rapidly exchange photos, as well as videos for a charge of 2 dollars for the initiator of the file transfer and at no cost for the receivers.
It might be a great feature that will turn many users to BitTorrent Shoot app, although it is worth mentioning that while the first three exchanges are free for the initiator, the rest will be charged as soon as the transfers is completed.
Nonetheless, the new filesharing app goes a long way to protect privacy. While file transfers are supported both through a Wi-Fi connection, as well as through a mobile one, the transfers take place through BitTorrent’s Sync protocol, peer-to-peer.
That means no data is stored in a cloud and the transfer takes places directly between the two or more devices involved in the process. Just be online and let the magic happen.
As tech blogs are reporting, the photo and video transfer, even across platforms would take place at faster speeds than conventional cloud transfers or data center powered file transfers.
The increased transfer speed is due to BitTorrent’s peer to peer protocol that breaks the photos or video in smaller pieces, allowing BitTorrent Shoot to transfer them to more peers simultaneously. The device that is receiving the files needs to scan the QR code of the device that initiated the transfer.
BitTorrent Shoot’s advantage is that the photos and video transferred device-to-device are less prone to data hacking and privacy breaches. The same applies for bulk transfers of photos and videos.
Whether users will find it useful remains to be seen.
For now, BitTorrent Shoot is the first app that BitTorrent is launching at a price, albeit low. For the advantages it offers, the price tag is justifiable according to company official statements.
