Map poverty predicted by satellite images

 

Poverty is one of the biggest issues around the world. Although there are countries where people are doing well, there are also many areas where humans do not have even clean water or houses. The elimination of poverty is one of the main goals for the near future. Researchers managed to create a map poverty by using satellite images.

The study was made at Stanford Univeristy by researchers who wanted to know what areas are the most affected by poverty , in the whole world. They have used images from satellite and machine learning. The algorithm picked out for the images the things that are easy to recognize by humans. They discovered that areas that have better light during the night are usually more developed. Moreover, there were roads and cities.

These maps could use more people and organizations to find out what countries  need more help.  The map poverty showed that Africa has areas where people are living so bad that they might not eat for days. This could be a step for a more efficient way to handle the poverty problem. We are already aware of what happens in some areas of Africa, but a few people went there to help them.

People tried to make strategies to help the areas where poverty is a huge issue. They build roads so the access to various basic needs is easier. The authorities also increased incomes to bring more people who are able to buy from markets. However, there is still more to do. In Africa, people are not able to have the basic needs that we might think are normal things.

There should be also more plans to provide education for children who live in those areas. According to a study, kids who go to school are healthier and can succeed in the future.  There are thousands of people who die every day of hunger. There is enough food for everyone but there are countries that have too much of it. We are wasting everyday food without thinking there are children who have not eaten for days.

Of course, people could work. The problem is most of them are too weak to work because they do not eat and they are also struggling with diseases. We should really be aware of the map poverty and do something to change it.
