L’OREAL’s new patch will monitor your sun exposure. This is the first time that the beauty company launches a technology device, which is easy to wear, as it looks like a small tattoo.
L’OREAL actually has a tech department that is run by the tech guru Guive Balooch. In order to make this new patch possible, his team partnered with the PCH design firm and with the MC10 sensor maker. The device is called My UV Patch and after you attach it to your bare skin, it measures the UV exposure and transmits the information to an app. To access the app you simply have to scan the sticker using your phone camera. The sticker is recommended to be worn when the sun is out, of course. The patch changes its color, depending of the strength of the sun. Photosensitive dyes were used to make a pattern of colors for the L’OREAL device. This is one of the few devices that can be attached to your skin and that is extremely flexible.
Even though it resembles a sticker, this patch can hang to your skin up to five days. There are some device like Fitbit, that are able to measure the UV but for when you want to get tanned, the patch is the best thing you can use, as it is almost invisible and you will forget you even have it on. The adhesive is transparent and it has a thickness of just 50 micrometers. The app is extremely easy to use and this might just be what you need for the summer, or if you are planning a trip in a sunny place, you’ll need it even sooner.
The concept of a skin-attached device isn’t new, but most of the concepts didn’t have exact goals and most of them remained to being concepts. But because these companies succeeded to create this innovative and useful device, probably more companies will follow their example and launch other similar devices.
The MC10 company has played a huge part in creating the UV patch. The company mostly develops tiny circuits and flexible technologies and it has advanced a lot in the last years. According to Roozbeh Ghaffari, the co-founder of the company, they have been working on this device for about six years. The partnership between the three companies allowed them to create an unprecedented product, which can be extremely valuable to health and is also easy to use.
