Hydropower is thought to be a cornerstone for the greenhouse gas emissions. Man-made lakes damaged our planet. From now on, the way we had regarded water reservoirs which were producing hydropower will change. Hydropower will no longer be thought to be a safe source of energy in our world. The study which was recently conducted demonstrates that water reservoirs produce an enormous amount of CO2 and they could be the cause of the climate change.
The analysis of two hundred studies has proved these man-made lakes contribute to the greenhouse effect. This study has shown that the quantity of carbon dioxide emitted by human-made lakes measures 1.3% of all greenhouse emission produced by people. Experts have demonstrated that artificial lakes generate a gigaton of CO2 every year. According to a declaration from the University of Washington, this incredible amount of carbon dioxide emissions overshadowed Canada’s greenhouse gas contribution.
The explanation of this terrible fact is simple. When an artificial lake is created, a valley is flooded with water. The organic substances from the ground are bolted down by the water’s microbes. This process produces carbon dioxide and methane, dangerous gasses for our ozone layer. Reservoirs are linked to rivers which continuously bring fresh organic material. Those nutrients brought into the artificial lakes are phosphorus and nitrogen, which are further stimulating greenhouse emissions.
The researchers from WSU argue that the hydropower given by the artificial lakes emit carbon dioxide and methane. Methane is 34 times more influential than the emissions of carbon dioxide over a hundred years. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that bio-fuel burning and rice fields emit a smaller amount of dangerous gasses than the production of methane. Reservoirs produce 25% more methane than scientists thought.
Water reservoirs were meant to help us generate hydropower, a way of recycling which was supposed to protect the environment. On the other hand, experts found out how dangerous this could be, nourishing global warming. Besides the green energy offered by artificial lakes, they are a source of navigation, flood control and also constitute a water provision for agriculture.
An idea that was thought to help people and the environment was proved to do harm to both of them. Do you believe we should stop using hydropower because of global warming, or we should take a risk to employ energy friendly for the environment?
