How to talk about weight with your teenager
We know that teenagers can get angry really fast, especially when you talk about their body. As a parent, you only want what is good for your child. If you want to talk to him/her about weight and healthy food, you should pay attention how you do this. Doctors say that if you want your teen to lose weight, you should not tell them that.
Researchers said that parents should focus on a healthy lifestyle than on weight. When you tell a teenager that he/she must lose weight, things can get worse because they will have a low self-confidence. However, if you start giving them fruits and vegetables instead of fast-food, a change will happen. According to a new study, more teenagers are struggling with obesity than ever before.
Of course, most of them go outside and eat fast food or drink soda. However, if parents learn them from their childhood what is healthy to eat, things might change when they are older.
Obesity is one of the biggest threats for American teenagers. They are eating food without thinking about their health and sometimes this happens because parents are not paying attention to their diet. We know that some foods might be tasty, but they should also help you be healthy. A person who struggles with obesity can have also heart problems or cancer.
What is important is the way we talk with our children about weight. If you tell them they are overweight or that they could use a diet, their goal will be to achieve a weight, not eat healthily. Some of them will not eat anymore or they will feel worse about their body and start to eat more unhealthy food. Speak with your teenager, ask him how he feels about his body, what changes he can make if he wants to be healthy.
Here are some pieces of advice if you want your teen to be healthy and also have trust in you. First of all, pay attention to what you say. If you say that you hate something about yourself, your child could think he has the same problem. Don’t say them they are fat or stupid or anything else that could hurt them. They will remember your words and they will have low self-confidence. You should have fruits and vegetables in the house and also try to have a family meal every day. This way you will know your teen had at least one healthy meal and also it could improve your relationship with him.
