These days, a state of emergency has been declared as Hawaii fights the homeless people.
For many people, Hawaii represents an exotic place, when they relax while confortable sitting in their tanning beds. For others, on the other hand, it is a place of struggle and poverty.
As a consequence, the governor signed a proclamation in order to help the increasing number of homeless people. He also stated that this measure will help both the young and the old generations.
“This proclamation will expedite the state’s plans to help these individuals and families to more quickly transition to permanent housing,” said Scott Morishige, a state official.
Gov. David Ige claimed that homelessness is a major concern for every county all through the state.
The statistics made by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reveal that Hawaii has approximately 7,620 homeless people; California has 114,000; New York, 80,000; Texas, 28,500. For Hawaii’s population of 1.36 million, the number of homeless people is quite significant.
As a matter of fact, the Aloha State has the biggest number of people without shelter.
More precisely, the proclamation permits the government to pay out approximately $1.3 million to help the homeless services and to found homes for these people. Building a housing facility for them is also on the list.
Ige declared that the biggest problem is the lack of shelter spaces for homeless.
Usually, the emergency state is declared for events such as floods and earthquakes. But now, it was also used for homeless. Los Angeles City Council also resorted to this measure regarding its homeless people, funding them with $100 million.
Authorities found that the number of homeless people increased with 12% in the last 2 years in the Southern California.
