man suffering from election season stress

Scientists discovered that there is such a thing as election season stress.

According to a new survey, Americans are suffering from election season stress. As the name suggests, the controversial candidates, the scandals that seem to stick to both sides, and the long-term media coverage can cause unnecessarily high anxiety levels amongst voters.

Council Chronicle already talked about the study that revealed the existence of election season stress and the factors that lead to the apparition of the nationwide phenomenon. In this article, we shall cover the best ways to get rid of anxiety so that you can be prepared for November 8th.

  1. There Is Such a Thing as Too Much Information

According to the researchers, there is such a thing as too much information. News outlets are constantly covering the elections, scandals about the candidates are emerging, even some late-night talk shows are talking to people involved with the current political scene.

While it is a voter’s right to stay informed, the volume of data related to the elections is enormous, making some people feel like they cannot possibly digest all of the information. The more people read, the more they feel like they have not grasped the entire situation, leading to the onset of anxiety.

Researchers advise voters who feel overwhelmed by the volume of news coverage to stick to the basics.

  1. Some Conversations Are Not Worth Having

Election season is sprinkled with heated arguments between Republicans and Democrats. Sometimes the independents are even fiercer when discussing their candidate of choice. This kind of talks is bad for the blood because more often than not they elevate blood pressure and raise the stress level.

The specialists urge the half of the population that feels affected by election season stress to avoid such talks, concentrating more on the repercussions of a fiery argument than on the benefits of proving that your candidate is better than that of your interlocutor.

  1. You Cannot Change the Future by Worrying, Just Voting

Some people start to feel the pressure of the elections on their shoulders because they feel like the outcome will affect their entire existence.

Experts believe that individuals must redirect their attention towards activities that will make them feel fulfilled like volunteering or fighting for a local cause.

Moreover, besides the presidential elections, there are also many state elections in various parts of the country, so voters can feel like they are working for a better country if they decide to participate in organizing the local elections.

  1. The World Will Not End on November 8th

The world will not end regardless of the winner. The only thing people can do is vote. By expressing their choice, they make sure that their voices were heard and they contributed to the nation’s decision.

No matter the outcome, things will not change overnight, and not even the president can make radical decisions, so it is no use in stressing out. At least, not until the last ballot is cast.

  1. Not All Political Promises Are Kept

Some voters are feeling anxious because they do not agree with the plans of the other candidate. They believe that if their choice does not win, the other will ruin the country. While both Trump and Clinton have made promises that were not in accordance with the views of all voters, just keep in mind that not all political promises are kept, and some controversial plans may not see daylight after November 8th.

  1. Keep Your Personal Criteria Simple

Everybody chooses a candidate by following some personal criteria. The media has not helped because most outlets seem to be out to get one candidate or the other, exposing their every flaw.

Try to keep in mind that every individual has his or her negative side, and try to focus on the details that seem more important for you. No matter if you prefer to pay attention to personality, controversy, experience, scandals, campaign, celebrity endorsers, or any other aspect, the choice is yours. However, don’t forget to keep it simple because the more factors you add, the harder the decision will become.

  1. Vote – It’s the Best Way to Get Rid of Election Season Stress

The most important thing to get rid of election season stress is to pick a candidate and show up on November 8th and vote. Just vote, express your opinion, make your voice heard, it will make you feel like you have contributed and it will chase away the anxiety.
