General Mills announced that several batches of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios produced on different dates in July are recalled.
Both the Honey Nut Cheerios and Cheerios cereals products produced on these dates contained undeclared allergens. Wheat is an allergen that may cause health problems and must be declared. As the General Mills recall is related to wheat as an undeclared allergen, the recall has been classified as a Class I.
The batches of Honey Nut Cheerios and the batches of Cheerios subject to the recall were produced in the Lodi facility, in California. In these products, wheat flour was mistakenly introduced in the usual flour used at the Lodi facility, which is gluten free.
The products are typically labeled gluten-free. General Mills is recalling the affected cereal products from the warehouses and the store shelves. A full list of the products and their codes is published on the General Mills website. Consumers who are suffering from wheat allergies or gluten intolerance, as well as celiac disease are urged to not consume the affected products. All customers who already purchased the products will receive a full refund or their replacement.
The recalled products include batches of Cheerios produced on four days, and batches of Honey Nut Cheerios produced on thirteen days. All boxes are labeled with the “Better if used by:” inscription, as well as the LD code which indicates their provenance at Lodi, California.
The Class I recall is a voluntary one. Currently, General Mills is producing five varieties of gluten-free Cheerios. The Honey Nut Cheerios and Cheerios cereals produced at other facilities belonging to General Mills are not included in the recall. They are gluten-free, as the label on the box indicates. Other gluten-free varieties include: the Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, the MultiGrain Cheerios, and the Frosted Cheerios.
