According to a new research published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal, exercise is the best method to fight the back pains. The study showed that the people who exercised had less problems with their back and the sick time used for work was used more rarely.
In order to cure more people who suffer from back pains and also to prevent them, the researchers suggest a better health education. This would include learning how to properly exercise and learning about the effects of a good posture.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, approximately 80% of the American adults experienced or will experience low back pain. This study wanted to focus on the best methods to prevent the back pain and to ease it once it is there. Data from 23 researches was collected and analyzed, with a total of 31,000 participants. The study discovered that exercising can reduce with 35% the risk of developing low back pain and can reduce the sick time taken from work with 78%.
The people who exercised and were also well informed on things like good posture had 45% less chances of having back pain. According to the lead author of the study, Daniel Steffens, the combination of education and exercise is the best if you are looking to prevent back pain.
The people involved in the study did various exercising programs, of various lengths, which did not focus on the back. They had exercising sessions approximately three times a week and did them from 2 months to 18 months. The researchers found out that once the exercising stopped, the back pain started to reappear. The study also discovered some inefficient methods when it comes to preventing back pain. The back belts that were designed in order to protect you from back injuries when you lift heavy things, shoe insoles and ergonomic programs are not as efficient as they are believed to be.
Another research showed that low back pain is the most encountered pain by the Americans, followed by headaches or migraines, neck pain and facial pain. Back pain is actually the leading disability among Americans under 45 years old, with more than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 64 suffering from it. Another issue is that the people who have back issues, have a worse mental and physical health as well.
