Humans are the most powerful creatures that live on Earth. We have the power to change things for the better, but we are also capable of destroying everything around us. According to the latest news, the famous East Fork wolf pack is gone due to hunting.
The species was endangered for many years, but here was still hope as a male, a female, and two pups were living in Alaska’s Denali National Park. An ecologist announced the media that the male was found dead and there is no sign for the rest of the pack. It seems that the last male was killed by hunters. Yes, it was in a national park, but animals are protected in the park itself, not beyond its borders. As there were no actual borders for the wolf to see, he was hunted and killed. In Alaska, hunting is a huge issue and there are more mammal species threatened to disappear.
The wolf pack was the star of the national park, with hundreds of visitors coming to see it each year. The researchers from the park tried to get as many visitors as possible. This was an efficient way of making people be aware of the endangered species. It was probably the most viewed wolf pack in the world’s history and now it is gone due to our ignorance.
Moreover, this was the first pack to be observed for almost 80 years. It was first studied by Adolph Murie in 1930 so image how important the pack was for the scientists. As technology evolved, researchers used high-tech methods to understand better the wolfs.
Unfortunately, they might all be dead. Researchers do not know for sure what happened to the mother and her pups, but they think it would be almost impossible to survive without the protection of a pack. The group was last seen on June 28 and now their den is empty, full of weeds.
People have been using over time several hunting methods such as targeting animals from plans or shooting wolves in their den. The authorities should involve more regarding this matter and make laws so that the animals can not be hunted so easy. Even though they made a buffer zone that banned wolf hunting in the area, hunters do not seem to care as the last East Fork male was found dead in an area protected by the buffer.
