The presidential campaign still has a long way to go until it runs its course. As such, all of us American voters need a little unwinding every now and then.
So, here is the news of the day that is bound to put a smile on your face and give you a little food for thought.
Deez Nuts is yet another addition to the long list of hopeful presidential contenders. Yes, Deez Nuts is the name under which a request was filed with the FEC. Not only has the candidacy request been approved, but the candidate behind this name has surged to 9 percent in the Public Policy Polling unofficial poll in North Carolina.
Who is Deez Nuts? He is a 15-year old from Iowa named Brady Olson who decided
“To clear the way for a future third-party movement”,
and as such filed his candidacy on July 26th.
Arguably, a courageous alternative identity has brought Brady up in the hottest topics on Twitter. The independent candidate’s moves and policy stances are followed with interest. He is for a balanced budget, against illegal immigrants receiving U.S. citizenship with the sole exception of their children, for an Iran nuclear deal. And, if it only were possible, for changing Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution so that a 15-year old could become the next and youngest president of the United States.
Brady is the son of Mark and Teresa Olson. The family lives in Wallingford, Iowa, where they own a small farm and 2,000 acres of corn and soybeans. As expected, Brady is starting the new school year next week.
Thus, his candidacy-related preoccupations will take a secondary place. Sophomore year is a big deal, so all requests for information from Deez Nuts will be handled via email.
Public Policy Polling, the non-formal polling company received Brady’s request under the name Deez Nuts. Jim Williams stated:
“ He said ‘I’m Deez Nuts. I’m running. Here’s my filing statement. Would you poll me?”
And so it started. A first unofficial poll got Deez Nuts at 7 percent. The following two saw increases to 8 percent in Iowa and 9 percent in North Carolina. Twitter has been buzzing as well.
According to some voices, the fact that a fictive character is polling so much, particularly when squared against top favorites of both Democrat and Republican parties, should tell us much about the need for third party candidates and where voter sentiment really lies.
For a funny ending note, when asked about VP choices, Brady Olson or Deez Nuts stated:
“It would also be great to find a VP, preferably McCubbins because the Nuts/McCubbins ticket sounds amazing”,
making reference to another fictional candidate that filed with the FEC, Limberbutt McCubbins, that is in fact…a cat.
