There are millions of Americans who wear contact lenses as an alternative to glasses. Although they seem safe, contact lenses can cause major problems if they aren’t used right. According to a CDC report, one in five people experienced eye damage because of these lenses. Doctors say that those who wear them should pay more attention because it can lead to long-term problems.
Researchers reviewed more than 1 000 infections due to contact lenses, between 2005 and 2015. Those patients had issues with their cornea or needed a corneal transplant. There were some cases that involved a visit to an emergency department or to a hospital. Michael Beach, director of the Healthy Water Program, at CDC, said that these lenses were a safe form of vision correction when they were worn as recommended. However, improper wear could cause eye infections.
Most of the people who had these infections were wearing then while they were sleeping or longer than they should have. Even though these are easy things to accomplish, people are not aware of the danger. Most of the people who had eye infections due to contact lenses were young.
So what should we do to stay away from eye infections? First of all, buy your contact lenses from a trusted source. There are a lot of sellers who would say anything just to get your money, but they could have the wrong prescription. Moreover, do not panic when you lose your lens in the eye. Use a solution and then remove the lens with your finger. Another thing would be to visit your doctor every year. He/she is going to tell you if there is something wrong with your eyes and how long you should wear your contact lenses.
One of the most important things to do is not share your lenses with others. When you share them, you increase the risk for an eye infection. It could affect also your friend’s eyes because they might not be the size he/she needs. We know that sometimes you are so tired that you fall asleep in a minute. However, do not sleep while wearing your contact lenses. Not all of them can be used all the time and they can affect your eyes.
Do not forget to clean your lenses, but don’t use tap water. They won’t be cleaned as good as they should be. Use the solution your doctor gave you and there will not be any problem.
