Patients who are struggling with breast cancer could skip chemotherapy. This conclusion comes from a big study made in Europe, called MINDACT. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer research.
There were two groups of patients. One who used chemotherapy and were associated with a 5-year survival rate without distant metastasis that was higher in comparison with patients who did not receive chemo. It seems that this procedure has a few benefits in consideration of the risks, costs and the pain patients will have. There might be possible that some patients will not benefit from chemotherapy and another solution has to be found for them.
Oncologists should know if the study is right because they have to decide which patients will skip chemo. Of course, this is especially for people with the early-stage disease because sometimes chemo is the only chance people have. What people must find out is if how good of a prognostic significance is required to determine if a patient requires chemotherapy.
However, it will be difficult to convince people that this procedure is not having so many benefits. For some people, every day spent with their families matters. They would do and try everything just to make sure they have more days to live. The patient will decide if he/she receive chemotherapy or not. The study cost around 45 million of euros and many cancer foundations were involved in finding the truth.
Chemotherapy refers to the use of medicines to treat cancer. Even though it might be scary, it is the only chance cancer patients could have. Surgery and radiation therapy kill or damage cancer cells in a certain area or in your whole body. Millions of people are alive because of it. Chemo is used to cure cancer, but most doctors do not use this word because there are no guarantees that cancer will go away. It takes years to know if a person is cured of cancer.
What we know for sure is that chemo controls the disease. It is used to make tumors get smaller or stop cancer from growing and spreading. There are few cases when cancer goes away. Most of the time, it is controlled as chronic diseases.
It is your choice, as a patient, if you want to have chemo or not. We hope that more studies will give us the right answer. Even though chemo might not effective compared to its costs and pain, it is the only chance cancer patients have to live more.
