Big Little Lies, the HBO miniseries, won no less than eight 2017 Emmy awards.
COUNCIL CHRONICLE – The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held this Sunday, September 17, were quite a big night for women as three female-focused series took home major prizes.
The Handmaid’s Tale‘s dystopia, Veep, and the Big Little Lies tackle different subject in distinct periods and eras but all have women and strong females at their center.
Reese Witherspoon, and Nicole Kidman, both part of the Big Little Lies series, did not forget to mention this aspect. Kidman, also an executive producer, slightly teased the possibility of there being a Season 2 of the show.
Big Little Lies Wins Eight Emmy Awards
It was a grand night for the “Big” family, as the HBO series took home no less than eight awards from sixteen nominations. The dark comedy-drama miniseries was written and created by David E. Kelley and based on the same named novel written by Liane Moriarty, the Australian author.

This HBO series was met with wide critical acclaim and now with a significant number of big awards at the 2017 Emmys. It won the Outstanding Limited Series with Nicole Kidman also taking home the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie award for her portrayal of Celeste Wright. She was up against her co-star Reese Witherspoon, who was nominated for her role as Madeline Martha Mackenzie.
Alexander Skarsgård also won an Emmy for the series, the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, for his portrayal of Perry Wright. Laura Dern snatched its female version, the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Renata Klein, two of the total eight awards for the series.
"I share this with my tribe of four ladies, I feel very proud of these roles…"

One of the big questions following this series of important awards was, of course, what would be happening to the series. Developed around the book, the series seems to have ended after its April 2017 conclusion.
In July, HBO revealed that it had asked the author to write a second book and that a second season might be possible as Moriarty was reported to be ‘actually considering it’.
The question quite normally and obviously resurfaced last night, with all the answers seemingly indicating to the cast’s willingness to continue. Still, there were no commitments as even Reese Witherspoon was shy in offering an exact answer.
She stated that “You already know we’re liars, so I don’t think you should trust everything we say. We’re thinking about it, talking about it.”
Still, both Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, stars and executive producers of the Big Little Lies series, did not fail to mention and accentuate the importance of increasing the opportunities for women both ‘in front and behind the camera’.
Witherspoon called for the need to “bring women to the front of their own stories and make them the heroes of their own stories.”
Kidman points out that: “”This was about women, but it was for everybody. We had so many people, men, and women of all different ages, watching the show”.
Such an amazing and powerful speech by an amazing actress! #NicoleKidman #BigLittleLies #Emmys https://t.co/lheYzZO0MO
