Scientists have registered great progress in fighting against tropical diseases. The record-breaking achievement was obtained after fighting for years against neglected tropical illnesses. The effort has increased after an important meeting had taken place five years ago in London. Reports show that in 2015 approximately one billion people all over the world were treated for at least one tropical illness.
Scientists backed by pharmaceutical companies registered great progress in combating tropical diseases
Starting with 2012, many companies have contributed with seven billion treatments. The World Health Organization declared that the key to achieving success was improving sanitation and water. This was what drove scientists on the road to progress. The London meeting from five years ago had as an outcome a pledge meant to control or annihilate ten neglected tropical diseases by 2020.
Among the illnesses listed there were trachoma, river blindness, and guinea worm. Statistics demonstrated that approximately 170,000 people die because of infections with a tropical disease every year. The most significant impact of tropical diseases is that they may cause patients to become disabled, being severely affected by infections.
Pharmaceutical companies donated treatments to fight against different illnesses
During an interview with BBC News, Bill Gates stated that pharmaceutical companies are worth of praise since they have done their part in developing a fantastic relationship by donating medications and treatments at a high scale. Bill Gates also argued that none of the well-known tropical diseases is worsening. Specialists managed to register a fantastic progress when it comes to developing cures for these conditions.
Gates also declared that pharmaceutical companies have a significant goal which was set to be accomplished by 2020. Luckily, the burden of all these illnesses does no longer put specialists under a great deal of pressure. For instance, the number of people suffering from lymphatic filariasis has decreased from 1.5 billion to approximately one billion people. Medical treatments seem to work, revealing great outcomes after tedious efforts.
Bill Gates also noted that guinea worm condition is almost entirely annihilated since last year specialists registered only 25 cases. Nevertheless, researchers’ work is harder to be developed in South Sudan. Despite this inconvenient, experts announced that people should not worry because it will not spread back again.
Scientists also registered an extraordinary progress on sleeping condition. The parasitic infection which is known to cause death has reduced now to less than 3,000 cases. Bill Gates pointed out that anyone who would be able to find out more about these terrible tropical diseases would also know that specialists worked hard to combat them.
