If you think that a cigarette a day cannot cause you any harm, studies will prove you are wrong. Scientists have revealed that even if you are not a heavy smoker, the chances are that a cigarette per day can cause an early death. The author of the study, Maki Inoue-Choi, who is also part of the division of cancer epidemiology and genetics at the US National Cancer Institute (NCI), has argued that there exists no such thing as a safe level of exposure to smoking.
She also argued that irrespective of how many cigarettes someone smokes, their lungs are still affected by the dangerous tobacco smoke which could cause an early death. A team of scientists conducted by Inoue-Choi has gathered information from more than 290,000 older Americans who have ages between 59 and 82. The purpose of the investigators was to test and determine the risks imposed by light smoking.
All participants were asked questions regarding their smoking habit and how did it gradually changed during nine different points during their lives, starting with the period before they turned 15 and continued until they turned 70. Researchers have compared non-smokers to those light smokers who had only smoked a cigarette a day. The result was unbelievable. Apparently, light smokers have a 64% higher risk of early death compared to those who never smoked.
The results have also revealed that those participants who declared that they have been smoking between 1 and ten cigarettes a day had a more increased risk of dying early, meaning 87%. Specialists claimed that is never too late to quit smoking. Every moment counts. The most important thing for smokers is to be very determined to stop fueling their bad habit and to try and lead a healthy life.
The study has also proved that the risk which contributed to an early death was decreased for former light smokers compared to those participants who continued to be light smokers. If light smokers quit, the chances are that they will not suffer from an early death. What is more, the younger the smoker is when he or she quits, the more decreased are the chances of an early death to appear.
The team of experts has also analyzed several causes of death. Light smokers had nine times more increased risks of developing lung cancer compared to people who never smoked.
